Lanzarote offers a number of other holiday resorts mainly situated down the east coast and the south of the Island. The most established is Puerto Del Carmen which offers a good choice of sandy beaches, lots of shops, a huge amount of cafes, bars and restaurants as well as a lively nightlife scene that goes on until the small hours. The old town/port area has more of an atmosphere than newer side of town, here you can find some traditional style restaurants and tapas bars. A bit further up the coast and you come to the Arrifice, the Capital of the Island. It's a nice place to visit for the day with a good weekly market and all the shops you need to find a gift for yourself or friends back home.
Playa Blanca is maybe the most complete resort on the island. It has a lovely white soft sand beach, a good selection of cafés, bars and restaurants that offer most kinds of cuisines including good quality local food. Playa Blanca has some top quality accommodation, from 3 to 5 star deluxe hotels, holiday complexes, private villas and some very good all inclusive hotels. The fantastic beaches of Papagayo are just 2klms from the resort centre, these beaches are by far the best on the whole island of Lanzarote. Also the marina Rubicon is worth a mention, it adds a touch of class to the resort and offers some lovely places to relax with a drink or to enjoy a good quality meal.
Costa Tequise is a modern resort witch has grown over the last few years. It has a number of mainly 4 and 5 star hotels, with many apartment and holiday complexes dotted throughout the resort. There is a sandy man made beach which is protected by an offshore breaker, this part of the Island often has strong winds which make it popular with wind and kite surfers.
On the north west coast lies the small seaside town of Arrieta. Its a great little place with some really simple good quality restaurants, serving the best paella, fresh fish and seafood that is to be found on Lanzarote. The wind and kite surfers flock here from all over the Island as it offers perfect conditions most of the year, although there are many rocks around this part of the coastline witch can be hazardous.
A visit to the Timanfaya national park is an unusual experience. Driving through the larva fields is something very different and is one of the few places in Europe that this is possible. The island has a number of now extinct or sleeping volcanoes, and here in the national park you can visit a restaurant that cooks your steak on the hot volcanic rock.
